This beginning of November marks the 92nd anniversary of the Russian Revolution.

Come find out about the Russian Revolution and its impact with a specific focus on Soviet culture and film.

Tuesday, 5:30THE BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN – (1925) a dramatised version of the mutiny that occurred in 1905 when the crew of the Russian battleship Potemkin rebelled against their officers of the Tsarist regime. Named the greatest film of all time at the World’s Fair at Brussels, Belgium, in 1958.
Discussion: “What is the relevance of the Russian Revolution today?”

Wednesday, 5:30 OCTOBER – (1927) a dramatization praising the 1917 October Revolution. Based on John Reed’s book “Ten Days That Shook the World”.
Discussion: “What is the relevance of the Russian Revolution today?”

Thursday, 7:00ALEXANDER NEVSKY (1938) depicts the attempted invasion of Novgorod in the 13th century by Teutonic Knights of the Holy Roman Empire and their defeat by the Russian people. The film is also a reflection of Soviet society and international relations at the time that it was made.
Discussion: “Was ‘Stalinism’ the logical outcome of the Russian Revolution?”

Each film will be presented with a discussion led by Amir Locker-Biletzki (PhD candidate in History).

The Legend of Bhagat Singh

Check out a Bollywood historical/biographical film about the life and trial of Bhagat Singh.   Winner of  two Indian National Film Awards, including the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi, and three Filmfare Awards, including the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Movie.

Bhagat Singh (1907–1931) was a major participant in the anti-imperialist struggle against the British.  He is considered to be one of the most influential revolutionaries of the Indian independence movement and is a martyr to millions.
